Callie vs SnapCalorie (2026): LiDAR Photo Tracking vs a Cheaper All-Rounder
SnapCalorie gives you 3 free AI logs every day and measures food with LiDAR on Pro iPhones. Callie costs $34.99 a year instead of $149. An honest comparison, checked September 2026.
Key takeaways
- SnapCalorie's free plan is more generous than Callie's. It gives you 3 AI logs every day for as long as you use it. Callie gives you 3 AI logs once, as a trial.
- Paying is a different story. SnapCalorie Premium (Annual) is $149 on the US App Store. Callie is $34.99 a year, less than a quarter of that.
- SnapCalorie uses the LiDAR depth sensor on iPhone Pro models to measure food volume directly. Callie reads the depth and EXIF metadata saved with an ordinary photo, so it works on any recent phone, but a dedicated LiDAR scan is the more direct measurement.
- Both apps log by photo and voice. Callie adds text logging, a barcode and menu scanner, an app in six languages (SnapCalorie is English only), BMI-matched daily diet plans, a streak dashboard and cheat days that keep your streak.
- Pick SnapCalorie if you log one to three meals a day by photo and don't want to pay, or if you want 100+ nutrients and LiDAR on a Pro iPhone. Pick Callie if you'll pay for unlimited logging and want it to cost $34.99 rather than $149.

- question: "Is SnapCalorie free?" answer: "Partly. SnapCalorie's FAQ says it is free for up to 3 AI logs per day, and that allowance resets daily. Unlimited logging needs SnapCalorie Premium, which is $149 a year or $19.99 a month on the US App Store as of September 28, 2026. Callie has no free tier: it gives you 3 AI logs once to try it, then costs $34.99 a year."
- question: "How much does SnapCalorie Premium cost?" answer: "The US App Store lists SnapCalorie Premium (Annual) at $149.00 and SnapCalorie Premium (Monthly) at $19.99, checked September 28, 2026. The listing also shows other SnapCalorie Premium purchases between $9.99 and $99.99 without saying which period they cover, so you may be offered a promotional price. Callie is $34.99 a year, $14.99 a month or $4.99 a week in the US."
- question: "Is SnapCalorie accurate?" answer: "SnapCalorie says its average error is around 15% of calories, about 150 calories on a 1,000-calorie dish. Its founders published the Nutrition5k dataset of 5,000 weighed dishes, which is more public research than most apps in this category have. We have not tested SnapCalorie ourselves, so we can't give an independent number. In our own 20-meal test, Callie's mean absolute error was 13%, against 17% for Cal AI."
- question: "Does SnapCalorie work on Android?" answer: "Yes. SnapCalorie AI Calorie Counter by Perception Labs is on Google Play. LiDAR portion measurement needs an iPhone Pro, so Android and non-Pro iPhones rely on the camera image alone. Callie runs on iPhone (iOS 18.2 or later) and Android, and reads depth metadata from photos on either."
- question: "What is the best SnapCalorie alternative?" answer: "If you want AI photo logging with a paid plan that costs much less than $149 a year, Callie is $34.99 a year and adds text logging, a barcode scanner, six app languages, daily diet plans and habit tools. If you want a free manual tracker with detailed micronutrients, Cronometer is the usual pick. If you only need 3 logs a day, staying on SnapCalorie's free plan may be the best deal of all."
- question: "Can I switch from SnapCalorie to Callie?" answer: "Yes. Note your weight, height and goal, install Callie, and complete the one-minute personalization. Past logs don't carry over between trackers, but Callie's adaptive target re-tunes from your weight trend every two weeks, so it adjusts to you quickly."
Callie is our app. We've tried to be fair to SnapCalorie, which has a better free plan than ours and more published research behind its photo model than almost anyone.
The 30-second answer
SnapCalorie is a photo-first tracker. It measures portions with the LiDAR sensor on iPhone Pro models and gives you 3 free AI logs every day. If that daily allowance covers you, SnapCalorie is the better deal, because Callie's 3 free logs are a one-time trial. Once you pay, the numbers flip: SnapCalorie Premium is $149 a year and Callie is $34.99. Callie also adds text logging, a barcode scanner, an app in six languages, daily diet plans and streak tools. SnapCalorie is English only and focuses on logging.

Here's the maths. Log one or two meals a day by photo and SnapCalorie's free plan covers you indefinitely. Callie would cost you $34.99 a year for the same thing. Log breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks and you'll hit SnapCalorie's daily limit most days. At that point you're choosing between $149 and $34.99 a year, and Callie is less than a quarter of the price.
Head-to-head
Portion sizing: LiDAR vs photo depth metadata
This is the most interesting technical difference, so here's how each approach works.
SnapCalorie uses the LiDAR scanner on iPhone Pro models. LiDAR is an active depth sensor. It sends out light and measures the distance to each point, so SnapCalorie can build a 3D shape of the food and estimate its volume directly. Its App Store listing calls this "LiDAR Precision (iPhone Pro)". On phones without LiDAR, including non-Pro iPhones and Android, it relies on the camera image.
Callie reads the depth and EXIF metadata stored in the photo file. Many recent phone cameras save a depth map and lens details with each shot, and Callie uses them to judge the plate's scale and the height of the food. This works on any phone whose camera saves that data, with no Pro model required. It doesn't work on screenshots or photos stripped of metadata, which get a rougher, image-only estimate.
Our honest read: on a Pro iPhone, a live LiDAR scan measures volume more directly than metadata from a regular photo, and we'd expect it to help most on mounded foods like rice, pasta and stews. Callie's approach covers more phones. We haven't run both apps on the same meals, so we won't claim either is more accurate in practice.
Accuracy and research
SnapCalorie has the stronger research record. Its founders came from Google's computer vision work, and the team published Nutrition5k, a dataset of about 5,000 dishes with every ingredient weighed. The company's FAQ puts its average error at "around 15% mean caloric error", or about 150 calories on a 1,000-calorie dish. That's SnapCalorie's own figure.
Our own figure comes from a smaller test: 20 meals weighed to 0.1 g, where Callie's mean absolute error was 13% and Cal AI's was 17% (method). The two tests used different meals and methods, so don't compare 13% with 15% directly. The fair summary is that both apps land in the 10–20% range typical of photo tracking. For more on why errors happen, see our accuracy study.
Correcting mistakes
Every photo tracker gets some meals wrong. Where the apps differ is when you catch it.
- Callie never logs a photo automatically. It shows a review screen with the detected foods, portions, calories and macros. You fix anything that's off and then confirm.
- SnapCalorie treats correction as something you do after the scan. Its listing says you can add a voice note ("pan-fried in olive oil") or "tap to adjust afterward," and that the AI learns from your corrections.
Both work. SnapCalorie's way saves a tap when the estimate is right. Callie's way means a wrong estimate never sits in your daily total unnoticed.
Ways to log
Both apps log by photo and voice. SnapCalorie's voice notes are good for calling out weights from a kitchen scale ("two eggs, tablespoon of butter"), and its nutrition label scanner reads packaged foods.
Callie adds text logging, a barcode scanner and a menu scanner for restaurant menus. That matters on days when you can't take a photo or talk out loud, like in a meeting or on a train.
What you can track
SnapCalorie tracks more: calories, macros and 100+ micronutrients, including vitamins, minerals and amino acids, from a food database of 500k+ foods checked against USDA data. If micronutrients matter to you, this is a real advantage.
Callie focuses on calories and macros, plus a weight tracker and a fasting timer for keto and intermittent fasting.
Beyond logging
SnapCalorie is mostly a logging tool. Callie includes features that SnapCalorie's listing and FAQ don't mention:
- A daily diet plan matched to your BMI. Choose keto, IF, a calorie cut, balanced or custom, and Callie suggests fresh meals and exercises each day, adjusted for your allergies.
- An adaptive calorie target that re-tunes every two weeks from your weight trend.
- A GitHub-style streak dashboard that shows your logged days as a grid.
- Scheduled cheat days that don't break your streak.
- An AI coach that replies in any language.
Languages and platforms
SnapCalorie's App Store listing names one language, English. Callie's app runs in English, French, Spanish, German, Arabic (right-to-left) and Japanese. If you don't want to use an English interface, that alone settles it. See our multilingual tracker roundup.
On platforms, SnapCalorie covers more ground. It runs on iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 or later), Apple Vision Pro and Android. Callie runs on iPhone (iOS 18.2 or later) and Android, with no iPad or web app.
When SnapCalorie is the better choice
Choose SnapCalorie if:
- You log three meals or fewer a day and don't want to pay. Its free allowance resets daily, and Callie's doesn't.
- You have an iPhone Pro and want LiDAR volume measurement.
- You track micronutrients. It tracks 100+ nutrients and Callie tracks macros.
- You value published research. Nutrition5k is a real, public dataset.
- You use an iPad or Vision Pro.
When Callie is the better choice
Choose Callie if you log more than three times a day and plan to pay. $34.99 a year is a lot less than $149. It also fits if you want text and barcode logging along with photo and voice, want to review every photo estimate before it's saved, need the app in a language other than English, or want diet plans and streak tools as well as a logger. Our tracker quiz can help if you're undecided.
How to switch from SnapCalorie to Callie
- Note your current weight, height, goal and calorie target in SnapCalorie.
- Install Callie from the App Store or Google Play.
- Complete the one-minute personalization and pick a diet plan.
- Use your three trial logs on different methods (a photo, a voice note, a typed meal) to see which suits you.
- If you're on SnapCalorie Premium, keep both until it lapses. If you're on its free plan, you can keep using it alongside Callie.
Past logs don't transfer, and that's normal between trackers. Check pricing for your region.
