The 30-second answer

Choose Yazio if you mostly eat packaged food bought in Europe, want a free manual calorie counter, or want a detailed intermittent fasting tracker. It is a German app with a large European barcode database, and its PRO plan is often cheaper than Callie in euros: the German App Store listed 12-month offers at €23.90 and €35.90, against Callie's €39.99.

Choose Callie if you want to log meals by photo, voice or text in a few seconds, and see every photo estimate on a review screen before it is saved. Callie also has an Arabic right-to-left interface, a streak dashboard, cheat days that keep your streak, and daily diet plans matched to your BMI. In the US, Callie is $34.99 a year against Yazio PRO's $47.90.

Pricing in dollars and euros

Yazio sells PRO through several App Store price points at once, and the one you see in the app depends on the offer running that day. Here is what each store listed on September 28, 2026.

Yazio prices from its App Store listings in the US, Germany, France and Spain (in-app purchases section), September 28, 2026. Callie prices from the Callie App Store listing.

The plain summary:

  • In the US, Callie's $34.99 is $12.91 less than Yazio PRO's standard $47.90 a year. Yazio's $23.90 offer is cheaper than Callie.
  • In Germany, Yazio is usually cheaper. The €35.90 annual price is €4.09 below Callie's €39.99, and the €23.90 offer is €16.09 below. Only the €83.90 tier costs more.
  • In France and Spain, it depends on the offer. €47.90 and €59.90 cost more than Callie; €11.90, €14.99, €23.90 and €23.99 cost less.

Yazio also has something Callie does not: a usable free version. You can count calories by hand in Yazio without ever paying, with ads. Callie gives you 3 AI logs to try it and then needs a subscription.

Is Yazio PRO worth it?

This is the question most people searching for a Yazio alternative are really asking. PRO adds, according to Yazio's App Store listings and help center:

  • AI food recognition from a photo
  • no ads
  • analysis of all nutrients, including vitamins and minerals
  • statistics over several years, and body measurements
  • custom meal plans
  • "weekend calories" (a different calorie goal on chosen days)
  • sync with Fitbit, Garmin and other wearables

PRO is worth it if you already like Yazio's diary, mostly eat packaged food with a barcode, fast on a 16:8 or 5:2 schedule, and can get one of the €23.90 or €35.90 annual offers. That is a lot of app for the price.

PRO is less worth it if your meals are mostly home-cooked or from restaurants, because those are the meals a barcode can't help with. You would be paying mainly for photo recognition. That is the point where an app built around AI logging, with voice and text as well as photos, starts to make more sense.

Head-to-head

Logging a meal

Yazio is a classic food diary with AI added on top. You search, scan a barcode, or (with PRO) take a photo. Yazio's help center says the photo feature detects the ingredients, estimates portions and nutrition, and lets you adjust ingredients, quantities and the meal name after the scan.

Callie is built around AI logging. You can take a photo, say the meal out loud ("two eggs, a slice of sourdough and a flat white"), or type it. Every photo scan opens a review screen with foods, portions, calories and macros, and nothing reaches your diary until you confirm. Callie also reads the depth and camera metadata stored in the original photo to estimate portion size. Screenshots lose that data.

Both apps let you fix a bad estimate. The practical difference is voice and text: Yazio's App Store listing does not mention voice logging, and for a mixed plate that has no barcode, speaking it is often the quickest way to log.

Food database

Yazio's big advantage. Its App Store listing claims more than 4 million searchable foods, and it has been built up around German and European supermarket products since 2015. If you scan a lot of Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Carrefour or Mercadona packaging, Yazio is likely to have more exact matches than we do.

Callie uses USDA FoodData Central plus internal nutrition data and AI estimation. It has a barcode scanner too, but for European packaged goods our coverage is thinner than Yazio's.

Accuracy

We ran a 20-meal kitchen-scale test for Callie and Cal AI: 13% mean absolute error for Callie and 17% for Cal AI (details in our Cal AI comparison). That was our own test, and we did not run Yazio through it, so we will not give Yazio a number. For barcoded food, Yazio's label data will beat any photo estimate, ours included.

Fasting

Yazio's fasting tracker is one of its strengths, with plans such as 16:8 and 5:2, timers and reminders. Callie has an intermittent fasting plan with a fasting timer, but if fasting is the main reason you use the app, Yazio has more depth. Our intermittent fasting guide covers how to choose a schedule.

Languages

Yazio's app is available in 20 languages, including German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Turkish and Japanese. That is more than Callie's six. Callie covers English, French, Spanish, German, Arabic and Japanese, and it is the one with a full Arabic right-to-left interface, which Yazio does not list. Callie's AI coach also chats in any language. See our multilingual calorie tracker roundup for more.

Habits and plans

Callie-only, as far as Yazio's listing shows:

  • A GitHub-style streak dashboard: a grid of logged days, so gaps are visible without nagging.
  • Cheat days you schedule in advance that don't break the streak. Yazio's closest feature is "weekend calories" in PRO, which raises your calorie goal on chosen days but has no streak attached.
  • A daily diet plan matched to your BMI: pick keto, intermittent fasting, a calorie cut, balanced or custom, and Callie refreshes meals and exercises each day, with allergies taken into account. Yazio has 2,900+ recipes and custom meal plans in PRO, which suits people who like to cook from a recipe library.
  • An adaptive calorie target that re-tunes every two weeks from your weight trend.

Platforms

Yazio runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android, and syncs with Fitbit and Garmin on PRO. Callie is a phone app for iPhone (iOS 18.2 or later) and Android, with Apple Health and Health Connect sync, and no watch or tablet app.

Track record

Yazio has been on the App Store since January 2015. On September 28, 2026 it had 4.6 stars from 443,665 ratings on the German store, 4.7 from 144,000 on the French store and 4.7 from 50,868 in the US. Yazio says more than 100 million people have used it. Callie was first released on August 11, 2025, and has a much smaller review base.

When Yazio is the better choice

Pick Yazio if:

  1. You want a free manual calorie counter and don't mind ads.
  2. You mainly eat packaged food from European supermarkets and log by barcode.
  3. Fasting is the center of your plan and you want Yazio's plans, timers and reminders.
  4. You can get PRO at €23.90 or €35.90 a year, both below Callie's €39.99.
  5. You want a recipe library of 2,900+ dishes to cook from.
  6. You need an Apple Watch app, Fitbit/Garmin sync, or a language Callie doesn't offer, such as Italian, Polish or Turkish.

When Callie is the better choice

Pick Callie if you want to log by photo, voice or text, see every photo estimate before it is saved, and cook or eat out more than you scan barcodes. Also pick it if you want an Arabic interface, a streak dashboard with protected cheat days, or a daily plan matched to your BMI. In the US, it is also less than Yazio PRO's standard $47.90. Our tracker quiz can help if you're still undecided.

How to switch from Yazio to Callie

  1. In Yazio, note your current weight, height, goal weight and fasting window.
  2. If you sync Yazio with Apple Health or Health Connect, leave that on so your weight history is there for Callie.
  3. Install Callie from the App Store or Google Play and run the setup.
  4. Pick a plan (intermittent fasting if you were fasting with Yazio) and log your next meal by voice or photo.
  5. If your Yazio PRO subscription is still running, use both until it ends. Cancel through your App Store or Google Play subscriptions.

Meal logs don't transfer between the two apps. Most people don't miss them after the first week.
