Key takeaways

  • There is no single best iPhone calorie tracker. Callie is best for AI photo, voice and text logging you review before saving; MyFitnessPal has the biggest database; Lose It! is the only one with a lifetime licence; Cronometer has the most useful free tier; MacroFactor has the best adaptive calorie target.
  • Check your iOS version first. Callie needs iOS 18.2 or later, MyFitnessPal, Lose It! and Cal AI need iOS 18.0, while Cronometer (iOS 15.5) and MacroFactor (iOS 15.6) still run on much older iPhones.
  • Most big trackers have an Apple Watch app: MyFitnessPal, Lose It!, Cronometer, MacroFactor, Yazio, Fitia, FatSecret and Cal AI all list watchOS support on the US App Store. SnapCalorie does not.
  • SnapCalorie is the only app here that says it uses the LiDAR scanner on iPhone Pro models to measure food volume. Its annual Premium plan is $149.
  • Ratings on the US App Store as of October 5, 2026: MyFitnessPal 4.7 from 2.37M, Lose It! 4.8 from 780K, Cal AI 4.8 from 368K, Cronometer 4.8 from 99K. Callie is new, with too few ratings to mean anything yet.

Callie is our app, and it is one of the eight below. We gave every other app the slot it is best at. Ratings, prices and iOS requirements come from the US App Store on October 5, 2026, and the sources are listed at the bottom.

The 30-second answer

The best calorie tracker for iPhone depends on how you log food. For AI photo, voice and text logging where you check every estimate before it is saved, pick Callie: AI Calorie Tracker at $34.99 a year. For the largest food database and a full Apple Watch app, pick MyFitnessPal. For free barcode scanning and the deepest Apple Health integration, pick Cronometer. For an adaptive calorie target, pick MacroFactor. If you would rather pay once than subscribe, pick Lose It! and its lifetime licence.

What matters on iPhone specifically

Most calorie apps do the same basic job on every phone. A few things only matter on iPhone.

Your iOS version. Newer apps drop old iOS versions fast. Callie requires iOS 18.2, and MyFitnessPal, Lose It! and Cal AI require iOS 18.0. Apple's iOS 18 compatibility list starts at iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation). On anything older, Cronometer (iOS 15.5) and MacroFactor (iOS 15.6) are the realistic options.

Apple Health. Every app here syncs with Apple Health, but they differ in what they write and what they do with your watch's calorie burn. We covered that in detail in best calorie tracker with Apple Health. The short version: let one app own your food data, or Health will count meals twice.

Apple Watch. Eight of the nine competitors we checked list watchOS support. Watch apps are mostly for glancing at what's left and quick-adding, not full logging.

Widgets and Live Activities. These save a tap or two a day. MyFitnessPal, Lose It! and Cronometer document home screen widgets, and Yazio documents Live Activities for logging from the Lock Screen.

The camera. iPhone photos carry depth and camera metadata, and Pro models have a LiDAR scanner. Two apps here use that: SnapCalorie for LiDAR volume measurement, and Callie for depth-aware portion estimates.

The best calorie tracker apps for iPhone, ranked

1. Callie: best for AI logging you review before it is saved

Callie is our app. You log a meal by photo, voice or a typed sentence, or scan a barcode or a restaurant menu. A photo scan opens a review screen with each food, portion, calories and macros, and nothing reaches your diary until you confirm it. Portion estimates use the depth and camera metadata your iPhone stores in the original photo, so a fresh photo works better than a screenshot.

It also has habit tools that most trackers don't: a GitHub-style streak dashboard, cheat days you schedule in advance that keep your streak, and BMI-matched daily diet plans. The calorie target re-tunes every two weeks from your weight trend. It syncs with Apple Health, runs in 6 languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Arabic and Japanese), and the AI coach replies in any language.

Pricing is 3 free AI logs, then $34.99 a year, $14.99 a month or $4.99 a week in the US. There is no free plan and no ads. That is less than half of MyFitnessPal Premium ($79.99) or MacroFactor ($71.99), though Cal AI's listed prices go lower.

Where it loses on iPhone: it needs iOS 18.2 or later, the highest requirement here. It has only one US App Store rating so far, so you are trusting a newer app. And its food database is smaller than MyFitnessPal's.

2. MyFitnessPal: best food database and Apple Watch app

MyFitnessPal's listing claims 20.5M+ foods, the largest database here, and it holds a 4.7 rating from 2.37M ratings. Its Apple Watch app quick-adds calories and water and shows remaining calories and macros. On iPhone it has home screen widgets for calories and macros, plus an interactive water widget on iOS 18 or later.

The catch is the paywall. Meal Scan, voice logging and the barcode scanner are Premium, and the free tier shows ads. Premium is $79.99 a year or $19.99 a month. Requires iOS 18.0 and watchOS 10. MyFitnessPal also owns Cal AI.

3. Lose It!: best if you would rather pay once

Lose It! runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac (M1 or later), Apple Watch (watchOS 9) and Apple Vision Pro, per its App Store listing, and has a web version. It has customizable widgets and reads Apple Watch resting and active calories for its free Calorie Bonus. Rated 4.8 from 780K ratings.

Snap It photo logging, AI voice and the barcode scanner are Premium. Premium in-app purchases run from $9.99 to $79.99, and it sells a lifetime licence at $49.99 or $59.99, which no other app here does. See best Lose It! alternatives if the paywall is the problem.

4. Cronometer: best free tier and Apple Health depth

Cronometer keeps barcode scanning free and tracks 84 nutrients from curated, lab-analysed sources. Its Apple Health integration is the deepest documented, with a manual backfill of past data. It has an Apple Watch app and iOS widgets for energy consumed, energy remaining, fasting, water and streaks. It also runs on iOS 15.5, so it is the best pick for an older iPhone.

Gold ($59.99 a year or $10.99 a month) removes ads and adds photo and voice logging. Rated 4.8 from 99K ratings. Our Callie vs Cronometer page compares the two.

5. MacroFactor: best adaptive calorie target

MacroFactor works out your energy expenditure from your intake and weight trend instead of trusting your watch, and adjusts your targets weekly. It has AI photo logging and a Describe logger for voice or text, both landing on an editable Plate view. Its Apple Watch app (watchOS 11) logs food by voice. It runs on iOS 15.6 or later.

There is no free tier after the 7-day trial. It costs $71.99 a year or $11.99 a month, and the app is in English and Japanese. Rated 4.8 from 22.9K ratings. More in Callie vs MacroFactor.

6. SnapCalorie: best use of the iPhone Pro camera

SnapCalorie's App Store listing says it uses the LiDAR depth sensors on iPhone Pro models to measure food volume, and it takes voice notes such as "two eggs, tablespoon of butter". It is free for up to 3 AI logs a day per its FAQ, and Premium is $149 a year. It needs iOS 17, is English-only, and lists no Apple Watch app. Rated 4.7 from 6.7K ratings. See Callie vs SnapCalorie.

7. Yazio: best Live Activities and fasting

Yazio documents Live Activities that let you log meals from the Lock Screen or Dynamic Island without opening the app. It pairs a calorie diary with a fasting tracker, has an Apple Watch app (watchOS 9) and comes in 20 languages. AI photo tracking and fasting plans are PRO, listed at $47.90 a year with offers from $23.90. Rated 4.7 from 51K ratings. See Callie vs Yazio.

8. Cal AI: lowest listed price for photo-first logging

Cal AI is built around the camera and has an Apple Watch app (watchOS 10). Its in-app purchases run from $0.99 to $29.99 and aren't labelled by billing period, so its top tier is below Callie's annual price. Its listing states that food scanning results require a subscription. In our testing it adds a scanned meal to your day straight away and you correct it afterward. Rated 4.8 from 368K ratings. Our Cal AI alternatives roundup goes further.

Fitia (4.9 from 22.5K, watchOS 10, $59.99 a year) and FatSecret (4.7 from 15.3K, free with Apple Watch complications) are also strong on iPhone. We cover them in the Android roundup and the barcode scanner guide.

When another app is the better choice

  1. You have an iPhone older than the XS or XR. Callie won't install. Cronometer or MacroFactor will.
  2. You want to log from your wrist. MyFitnessPal and MacroFactor have the most capable watch apps.
  3. You mostly eat packaged food. A barcode with a big database beats a photo estimate. MyFitnessPal Premium has the most entries, and Cronometer does it for free.
  4. You hate subscriptions. Lose It! Premium Lifetime costs less than two years of most plans here.
  5. You won't pay anything. Cronometer or FatSecret. Callie is not free after 3 AI logs.

For a pick by type of user rather than by device, see which calorie tracker.

One food app per Health account

If two calorie apps both write meals to Apple Health, your Dietary Energy total doubles. Keep write permission on only for the app you log in.
