# How Many Calories in a Shawarma? Chicken vs Beef, Wrap vs Plate

> A chicken shawarma wrap runs from about 200 to 830 calories, and a platter with fries passes 1,000. Here is a component-by-component breakdown from USDA and UAE retailer data, five assembled orders, what chains publish, and how to log the toum.

## Key takeaways

- A small chicken shawarma wrap is about 380 calories by our component arithmetic. A large one with fries inside and two spoons of toum is about 830, and an Arabic platter with fries on the side is about 1,150.
- Toum is the swing ingredient. USDA lists garlic sauce at 109 calories per tablespoon, so the difference between one spoon and three is about 220 calories, more than the difference between chicken and lamb.
- Saudi chain Shawarmer publishes calories for every wrap: 203 for its smallest Garsa, 356 for the Mafloqah and 623 for the Arabi. Adding fries and a soft drink takes the Arabi to 995.
- Chicken meat is the lighter filling. Spinneys lists its chicken shawarma at 167 calories per 100 g and USDA lists roasted chicken thigh at 179, against 270 for 80/20 beef and 283 for ground lamb.
- A photo app sees the wrap, not the garlic sauce inside it. Log the toum as its own line, about 1 tablespoon for a small wrap and 2 for a large one, before you confirm the entry.

Callie is our app. This is a data page: the calorie values come from USDA FoodData Central, UAE retailer labels and chain menus, and the assembled totals are our own arithmetic from those values. The full source list is at the bottom.

## The 30-second answer

A chicken shawarma wrap has about **200 to 830 calories**, depending on size, bread and sauce. A small wrap in Arabic bread with one spoon of toum is about 380 calories. A large one with fries inside and two spoons of toum is about 830. A chicken plate with rice and hummus is about 855, and an Arabic platter with fries is about 1,150. Saudi chain [Shawarmer publishes](https://shawarmer.com/en/menu/category/shawarma) 203 to 623 calories for its wraps. Beef or lamb adds roughly 90 to 105 calories per 100 g of meat. Toum, at 109 calories a tablespoon (USDA), moves the total more than the choice of meat does.

## Shawarma calories by component

The quickest way to estimate any shawarma is to add up its parts. These are the values we used, per 100 g and per typical amount in a wrap.

| Feature | Per 100 g | Typical amount | Calories in that amount | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken shawarma meat (breast, retail) | 167 kcal | 100 g | 167 kcal | Spinneys / Freshly Foods label |
| Chicken thigh, roasted | 179 kcal | 100 g | 179 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 172388 |
| Beef, 80/20, cooked | 270 kcal | 100 g | 270 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 171797 |
| Lamb, ground, cooked | 283 kcal | 100 g | 283 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 172544 |
| Arabic bread (Golden Loaf, large) | 245 kcal | 50 g / 90 g | 123 / 221 kcal | Spinneys label |
| Pita, white | 275 kcal | 1 large pita, 60 g | 165 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 174915 |
| Toum / garlic sauce | 683 kcal | 1 tbsp, 16 g | 109 kcal | USDA FNDDS 2710169 |
| Toum, olive-oil brand (Obour) | About 643 kcal | 2 tbsp, 28 g | 180 kcal | Obour label |
| Tahini (pure sesame paste) | 592 kcal | 1 tbsp, 15 g | 89 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 168604 |

| Salad, lettuce and tomato, no dressing | 24 kcal | 1 cup, 73 g | 18 kcal | USDA FNDDS 2709822 |
| Tabbouleh | 127 kcal | 1 cup, 160 g | 203 kcal | USDA FNDDS 2709131 |

_USDA FoodData Central and Spinneys UAE product pages, checked October 23, 2026. Amounts in the 'Typical amount' column are our assumptions, not published serving sizes. The 50 g and 90 g bread weights are our estimates because Spinneys does not list a piece weight._

Two notes on the meat. The Spinneys product is cooked chicken breast with salt and spices, at 26.6 g protein and 4.0 g fat per 100 g, so it is the lean end. Restaurant shawarma may be thigh or breast and is usually marinated, often with oil, so we use the USDA thigh value of 179 for restaurant wraps. Spinneys' in-store beef shawarma is flank steak marinated with canola oil, but its page lists no nutrition values.

## Five common orders, added up

Assembled from the table above, these are the orders people actually buy in the UAE. They are our arithmetic, not lab measurements.

| Feature | What's in it | Calories (our estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Small chicken wrap | 80 g chicken, 50 g Arabic bread, 1 tbsp toum, pickles | About 380 |
| Large chicken wrap with fries and toum | 130 g chicken, 90 g bread, 50 g fries, 2 tbsp toum, pickles | About 830 |
| Beef wrap in pita | 100 g beef, 60 g pita, 1 tbsp tahini, tomato, onion, pickles | About 535 |
| Chicken plate | 150 g chicken, 1 cup rice, 60 g hummus, salad, 2 tbsp toum, pickles | About 855 |
| Arabic platter | Large wrap sliced, 1 tbsp toum inside, 117 g fries, 2 tbsp toum on the side | About 1,150 |
| US gyro sandwich (comparison) | 200 g sandwich, USDA FNDDS 2706962 | 368 |
| UK döner kebab (comparison) | Average of 494 kebabs, before salad and sauce, LACORS 2009 | Nearly 1,000 |

_Our totals from the component table, rounded to the nearest 5 calories. Gyro value from USDA FoodData Central; döner value from LACORS survey coverage in The Register, January 27, 2009._

The large wrap lands almost exactly on the 835 calories Arise lists, and the small one sits near the 425 to 430 that SnapCalorie and Calorique list. The difference is fries and a second spoon of toum, not the chicken.

## What chains publish

Few UAE shawarma shops publish nutrition, so the best published figures come from one Saudi chain and one UAE healthy-food brand.

**Shawarmer**, a Saudi chain, lists calories and protein for every wrap on its [menu page](https://shawarmer.com/en/menu/category/shawarma). All of them contain fries, pickles and its garlic-style mutawam sauce:

- Garsa, the smallest: 203 calories, 11 g protein
- Mafloqah, one slice of Arabic bread: 356 calories
- Saji, in saj bread: 599 calories
- Arabi, in Arabic bread: 623 calories, 30 g protein
- Arabi as a meal with fries and a soft drink: 995 calories

**Kcal**, a UAE healthy-food brand, lists its [chicken shawarma](https://restaurants.kcallife.com/en-ae/menu/quesadillas-and-wraps/kcal-chicken-shawarma/) at 469 calories with 43.8 g protein and 16.6 g fat, in a whole-wheat wrap with tahini yoghurt sauce, at AED 40. Its side of tahini sauce is 72 calories.

We found no published nutrition for Al Mallah, Allo Beirut, Shawarma Station or Operation Falafel on their own sites. Dubai Municipality announced in May 2019 that menus would have to show calories. Director-general Dawoud Al Hajri said the aim was ["to oblige food establishments to be fully transparent in declaring calories on all foods"](https://www.khaleejtimes.com/uae/dubai-municipality-asks-food-establishments-to-declare-calorie-content-on-menu). In July 2019 [Gulf News reported](https://gulfnews.com/uae/calorie-display-in-dubai-menus-delayed-for-two-years-1.65352261) that the mandatory rule had been deferred by two years. If your shop prints calories on the menu, use that number.

## Why published numbers range from about 420 to 835

Search for shawarma calories and you'll see anything from about 420 to 835 for one wrap. Calorique lists 430 for a 200 g wrap, SnapCalorie 424.5 for 235.8 g, and Arise 835 per serving from its users' logs. They aren't contradicting each other so much as describing different wraps.

Five things drive the spread:

1. **Weight.** An Italian lab study of döner found servings from 274 to 618 g in two towns. Shawarma varies just as much.
2. **Toum.** At 90 to 109 calories per tablespoon, one spoon versus three is about 220 calories.
3. **Fries inside.** Gulf wraps often include them. Fifty grams is about 156 calories.
4. **Bread.** Shawarmer's 203-calorie Garsa and 623-calorie Arabi have the same filling in different bread.
5. **The meat cut.** Breast is 167 per 100 g, thigh 179, lamb 283, before any fat dripped from the spit.

## Chicken vs beef or lamb shawarma

Chicken is the lighter meat by about 90 to 105 calories per 100 g. Beef and lamb also bring more fat, which is what makes them taste richer.

Using USDA cooked values per 100 g:

- Chicken breast shawarma (Spinneys): 167 calories, 4.0 g fat
- Chicken thigh, roasted: 179 calories, 8.2 g fat
- Beef, 80/20, cooked: 270 calories, 17.8 g fat
- Lamb, ground, cooked: 283 calories, 19.6 g fat

In a wrap with 100 g of meat, switching from lamb to chicken saves about 105 calories. Switching from two spoons of toum to one saves about the same. If you prefer beef or lamb, pairing it with tahini in pita keeps the total near 535 in our beef example.

Shawarma is salty whichever meat you choose. The Spinneys chicken product has 548 mg sodium per 100 g, and the Italian döner study found an average serving covered 85.5% of daily salt.

## Wrap vs plate

A plate isn't automatically the lighter choice. It drops the bread but usually adds more meat, rice, hummus and a larger pot of toum.

Our worked chicken plate, with 150 g chicken, a cup of rice, a 60 g scoop of hummus, salad, pickles and two spoons of toum, comes to about 855 calories. That's slightly more than a large wrap.

The plate wins when you build it differently. Swap the rice for a second cup of salad and the plate drops by about 185 calories. Use one spoon of toum instead of two and it drops another 109. That gets you to about 560 calories with 150 g of meat, which is more protein than most wraps.

The Arabic platter is the heaviest common order. It's a full wrap, sliced and toasted, with a side of fries and extra toum. At about 1,150 calories in our estimate, it's in the same range as Shawarmer's 995-calorie Arabi meal, which also includes a soft drink.

## Shawarma, gyros and döner

Shawarma, Greek gyros and Turkish döner all come off a vertical spit. The main differences in calories come from portion and sauce.

- **Gyros.** USDA's FNDDS lists a gyro sandwich at 184 calories per 100 g, or 368 for a 200 g sandwich.
- **Döner.** In 2009, UK officers from 76 councils sampled 494 döner kebabs for LACORS. [The Register reported](https://www.theregister.com/2009/01/27/doner_kebab_survey) an average of "nearly 1000 calories" and a worst case of 1,990 before salad and sauces. LACORS chairman Cllr Geoffrey Theobald said, "We would never consider kebabs part of a calorie controlled diet, but the level of saturated fat and salt in some is a serious cause for concern."
- **Döner in Italy.** A [2015 study in the Italian Journal of Food Safety](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5076648/) measured döner from 20 shops. An average serving covered 45% of a woman's recommended daily energy and 36% of a man's.

A typical Gulf chicken shawarma is smaller than a UK döner. The large Dubai wrap with fries is closer to the döner end.

## Lighter orders that still taste good

The best savings come from the sauce and the fries, not from giving up the meat. These are the swaps we use, with savings worked out from the component table.

| Swap | Saves about |
|---|---|
| Toum on the side, use 1 tsp instead of 2 tbsp spread inside | 180 kcal |
| No fries inside the wrap, extra pickles and lettuce instead | 155 kcal |
| Plate: salad instead of a cup of rice | 185 kcal |
| Platter: side salad instead of fries | 345 kcal |
| Saj or a half loaf (50 g) instead of a large loaf (90 g) | 100 kcal |
| Chicken instead of lamb, 100 g | 105 kcal |

Our favourite lighter order is a small chicken wrap in saj or a half loaf, no fries inside, extra pickles, toum on the side, and a cup of plain salad. With a teaspoon of toum it comes to about 325 calories, against about 830 for the large wrap with fries and toum. You still get the garlic. You just choose how much.

Pickles barely count at 12 calories per 100 g. Tahini sauce is lighter per spoon than toum: pure tahini is 89 calories a tablespoon before it's thinned with lemon and water, and Kcal's side of tahini sauce is 72 calories.

## How to log a shawarma in a photo app

Photo apps see the wrap, not the sauce inside it. Toum is spread on the bread, soaks in, and leaves no trace in a picture, so photo estimates of wraps tend to come in low.

The research points the same way. In a [NUTRITION 2026 conference abstract](https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1136415) released in July 2026, researchers ran 102 meals through four photo apps. All four underestimated calories "by about 250 to 345 calories, on average" and fat "by about 30 grams". We cover all six causes in [why AI calorie apps undercount](/blog/why-ai-calorie-apps-underestimate). Regional food is one of them. A 2022 paper on food recognition noted that ["food recognition with respect to Middle Eastern cuisines has remained unexplored"](https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.09432), and its own model reached 94% accuracy across 23 Middle Eastern dish classes.

What to do:

1. **Log the wrap or plate as the main item.** Pick the size that matches: small, large, plate or platter.
2. **Add toum as its own line.** Use 1 tablespoon for a small wrap and 2 for a large one. For a side ramekin, log what you actually used, counting in tablespoons.
3. **Add fries if they're inside.** About 50 g, or 156 calories, in a large wrap.
4. **Use the chain's number when it exists.** Shawarmer and Kcal publish theirs.

The same rule applies to any oily sauce. Our [hidden calories guide](/blog/hidden-calories-oil-butter-sauces) has per-tablespoon values for oil, butter and dressings.

## Logging shawarma in Callie

Callie logs food from a photo, your voice or text, and a photo scan is never logged automatically. It opens a review screen first. That's where the toum goes in: tap to add an item and type or say "2 tbsp garlic sauce", or edit the portion if Callie already found it.

You can also skip the photo and describe it: "large chicken shawarma in Arabic bread with fries inside and extra toum." For a shawarma you order every week, save it once as a meal with the toum included, and re-log it in one tap.

A few things that help with UAE food:

- The app is available in Arabic, with a right-to-left layout, as well as English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese.
- The AI coach answers in any language, so you can ask it in Arabic how to fit a shawarma into today's budget.
- The menu scanner reads restaurant menus. It's paid after the trial, like the rest of the AI logging.

Callie doesn't prompt you about the toum. You add it yourself. Pricing is 3 AI logs to try it, then AED 99.99 a year in the UAE or $34.99 in the US. Details are on [our pricing page](/pricing).

This page is about calorie estimates, not diet advice. Shawarma is high in salt. If you're managing blood pressure, kidney disease or another condition, ask your doctor or a registered dietitian what fits.

## When another option is the better choice

- **The shop publishes its calories.** Use the menu figure from Shawarmer, Kcal or any chain that prints one. It beats any photo estimate, including ours.
- **You're watching sodium.** Callie doesn't track sodium or other micronutrients. Cronometer does, and its free tier includes a barcode scanner. Gold, at $59.99 a year, adds photo and voice logging.
- **You want ingredient-level control on every log.** MacroFactor's editable Plate view lets you set each component of a wrap before it saves, at $71.99 a year.

Callie fits best if you want photo, voice and text logging with a review step, an Arabic interface and a coach you can ask in Arabic, at AED 99.99 a year.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: How many calories are in a chicken shawarma wrap?**
A: Between about 200 and 830, depending on size. Shawarmer's published figures run from 203 calories for its smallest wrap to 623 for the Arabi bread version. Our component arithmetic puts a small Dubai-style wrap at about 380 calories and a large one with fries and two tablespoons of toum at about 830. Kcal, a UAE healthy-food brand, lists its whole-wheat chicken shawarma at 469.

**Q: Is chicken or beef shawarma lower in calories?**
A: Chicken, by roughly 90 to 105 calories per 100 g of meat. USDA lists roasted chicken thigh at 179 calories per 100 g, 80/20 ground beef at 270 and ground lamb at 283. Spinneys lists its chicken-breast shawarma at 167. The sauce and bread still matter more than the meat in most wraps.

**Q: How many calories are in toum (garlic sauce)?**
A: About 90 to 110 per tablespoon. USDA FoodData Central lists garlic sauce at 683 calories per 100 g, or 109 per 16 g tablespoon. A US-made toum, Obour, lists 180 calories per 2 tablespoons (28 g), which is 90 per tablespoon. Toum is mostly oil, so it is the densest thing in the wrap.

**Q: Is a shawarma plate healthier than a wrap?**
A: Not automatically. A plate swaps the bread for rice, hummus and salad and usually brings more meat. Our worked example of a chicken plate comes to about 855 calories, more than a large wrap. It becomes the lighter option when you swap the rice for salad and keep the toum to a spoon.

**Q: How do I log shawarma in a calorie app?**
A: Log the wrap or plate, then add the toum as a separate line. A photo can show the bread, meat and pickles, but not the garlic sauce spread inside or soaked into the bread. Use about 1 tablespoon of garlic sauce for a small wrap and 2 for a large one, and log any side ramekin by how much you used.

**Q: How does shawarma compare with gyros and döner?**
A: They are close relatives with different portions. USDA lists a gyro sandwich at 368 calories for 200 g. A 2009 survey by UK councils found the average döner kebab had nearly 1,000 calories before salad and sauce, and an Italian lab study found döner servings of 274 to 618 g. A small Gulf chicken wrap is lighter than either, and a large one with fries sits between them.
