Callie is our app, and it competes with Cal AI. We give Cal AI credit where it's due and label our own claims as ours. Prices come from the US App Store on October 13, 2026, and every source is listed at the bottom.

## The 30-second answer

**Cal AI is worth it if you log almost everything by photo and want the fastest, simplest flow at a low price.** Its top US App Store price is $29.99, it runs in 15 languages, and since the MyFitnessPal deal it draws on MyFitnessPal's food database. It's harder to recommend if you want to see and fix a photo estimate before it counts, want to log by voice, or are wary of its billing history: Apple pulled it from the App Store in April 2026 over its paywall design and restored it after fixes. Read the price and renewal terms on the paywall before you tap anything.

## How much is Cal AI?

Cal AI is free to download, and the paid plans are in-app purchases. Here is everything the [US App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cal-ai-calorie-tracker/id6480417616) showed on October 13, 2026:

| In-app purchase | Price |
|---|---|
| Streak Restore | $0.99 |
| Unlimited | $2.99 |
| Unlimited | $5.99 |
| Unlimited | $9.99 |
| Unlimited / Unlimited Plan | $19.99 |
| Unlimited | $29.99 |

The listing doesn't say which of these is weekly, monthly or yearly. Several prices appear more than once, which usually means the same plan is set up as more than one product, for example for a trial or a discount.

### How much is Cal AI a month?

We can't confirm it from the listing. Third-party reviews most often report **$9.99 a month**, with other monthly prices from $5.99 to $19.99. A [June 2026 pricing guide](https://www.eesel.ai/blog/cal-ai-pricing) lists $9.99 a month as the most common rate and says some users have seen a weekly option of about $2.99.

Weekly billing is the most expensive way to pay for any app. At $2.99 a week, a year costs about $155. At $9.99 a month, it's about $120. The annual plan is far cheaper.

### How much is Cal AI per year?

The highest listed price, **$29.99**, matches what most reviews report as the annual plan. The same June 2026 guide reports that some users were offered $19.99 a year, and others a higher annual price. That variation has a cause, covered next.

### Why the price you see may differ

Cal AI tests its paywall constantly. A [case study published by Superwall](https://superwall.com/case-studies/cal-ai), its paywall vendor, on April 15, 2026 says Cal AI ran 123 A/B experiments on iOS across 46 trigger points, with 160 paywall designs. The tests covered pricing presentation, a spin-the-wheel discount paywall, and combinations of weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual and lifetime plans.

In practice, two people can see different offers. If you close the first paywall, you may get a second one with a different price. That second-offer flow was one of the things Apple objected to in April 2026.

Look for the amount you'll actually be billed and how often, not the per-week figure. Then check Settings, your name, Subscriptions on iPhone to confirm what you bought.

## Is Cal AI free?

Not in any useful sense. The App Store listing says: "Food scanning analysis results require a subscription." You can download the app and go through onboarding, but photo scanning, the main reason to use it, is paid.

Third-party reviews describe a short free trial, often 3 days, that asks for payment details up front. We couldn't confirm the trial length from Cal AI's own pages, and it may change between paywall tests. What Cal AI's [terms](https://www.calai.app/tos) do say is that subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the current period ends.

Two more details from Cal AI's [FAQ](https://www.calai.app/faq):

- You can't cancel from inside the app. Cancel in your phone's subscription settings or, for web purchases, on Cal AI's site. Deleting the app doesn't cancel anything. Our [guide to cancelling Cal AI](/blog/how-to-cancel-cal-ai) covers every case.
- A subscription bought on iPhone doesn't carry over to Android, and the reverse is also true.

## Is Cal AI legit?

Yes. Cal AI is a real app from Viral Development LLC, the seller named on the App Store, and it is owned by MyFitnessPal. The acquisition [closed in December 2025 and was announced on March 2, 2026](https://techcrunch.com/2026/03/02/myfitnesspal-has-acquired-cal-ai-the-viral-calorie-app-built-by-teens/). Terms were not disclosed, and Cal AI still runs as its own app with its own subscription. We cover what changed in [MyFitnessPal vs Cal AI](/blog/myfitnesspal-vs-cal-ai).

The reason people ask is the April 2026 removal. Apple took Cal AI off the App Store and told [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/04/21/apples-cal-ai-crackdown-signals-its-still-policing-the-app-store/) it had found several violations:

- An embedded Stripe checkout that bypassed Apple's in-app purchase.
- A paywall that "displayed the weekly calculated pricing more prominently than the actual amount the user would be billed."
- A free-trial toggle that obscured the subscription's automatic renewal.
- A second, different subscription offer shown to people who declined the first.

[MacRumors reported](https://www.macrumors.com/2026/04/21/apple-cal-ai-app-store-removal/) Apple's position that the problem was the deceptive billing design, not external payments as such. The developer fixed the issues and the app returned. So Cal AI is legit, and the app works. The billing history is the reason to read the paywall slowly.

## Is Cal AI good? What you get

Cal AI does a few things and does them well.

- **Photo scanning.** Take a picture and get calories and macros. Cal AI says your phone's depth sensor helps estimate volume.
- **Barcode and label scanning** for packaged food.
- **MyFitnessPal's database.** Since the acquisition, Cal AI [is integrated with MyFitnessPal's nutrition database](https://techcrunch.com/2026/03/02/myfitnesspal-has-acquired-cal-ai-the-viral-calorie-app-built-by-teens/), which helps with branded and chain-restaurant food.
- **15 languages**, including Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Japanese and Spanish, per the App Store listing.
- **iPhone (iOS 18.0 or later) and Android.**
- **A simple, fast interface.** Few screens, few decisions. This is the main reason people like it.

### How accurate is it?

Cal AI's FAQ says it is "about 80% accurate" without describing a method. An NIH team presented a [NUTRITION 2026 abstract](https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1136415) that tested Cal AI, MyFitnessPal, Lose It! and Appediet on 102 weighed meals. As a group, the four apps underestimated by about 250 to 345 calories per meal when nobody corrected the photo estimates. The release doesn't give separate results for Cal AI. In our own 20-meal test from May 2026, Cal AI averaged 17% error and Callie 13%. That is our test, not an independent one, and the method is on the [Callie vs Cal AI](/compare/callie-vs-cal-ai) page.

The full breakdown, including why photos miss cooking fat, is in [Is Cal AI accurate?](/blog/is-cal-ai-accurate)

### The trade-off: it logs straight away

In our testing, Cal AI adds a scanned meal to your day as soon as the scan finishes. You can open and edit it afterward. If you don't, a low estimate stays in your total. Given that photo apps tend to run low, this matters more than a few points of model accuracy.

## Is Cal AI better than MyFitnessPal?

They're owned by the same company and aimed at different people. MyFitnessPal CEO Mike Fisher told TechCrunch: "Cal AI is for those preferring speed over accuracy. MFP is for those wanting the reverse."

| Feature | Callie | Cal AI | MyFitnessPal Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listed US price | $34.99/yr, $14.99/mo, $4.99/wk | $0.99 to $29.99, periods not labelled | $79.99/yr, $19.99/mo |
| Main way to log | Photo, voice or text | Photo | Search and barcode |
| Photo estimate shown before it is logged | Yes | Logs straight away in our testing | See app |
| Voice logging | Yes | No | Premium |
| Barcode scanner | Yes | Yes | Premium |
| Food database | USDA + internal | MyFitnessPal's | MyFitnessPal's |
| App languages | 6 | 15 | See app |
| Web app | No | No | Yes |
| Owner | Inlab Products (independent) | MyFitnessPal | Francisco Partners |

_US App Store listings checked October 13, 2026, and the brands' own pages. Cal AI's listing does not label billing periods. Cal AI logging behaviour is from our own testing._

Choose Cal AI over MyFitnessPal if you log mostly home-cooked or restaurant plates and want speed. Choose MyFitnessPal if you log mostly packaged food by barcode or search, want a web app, or rely on a wearable integration. Neither subscription covers the other. The longer comparison is in [MyFitnessPal vs Cal AI](/blog/myfitnesspal-vs-cal-ai).

## Is Cal AI worth it? Our verdict

**Cal AI is worth it if:**

- You log almost entirely by photo and want the fastest flow.
- Price matters most. Its top listed price, $29.99, is below Callie's $34.99 a year and well below MyFitnessPal Premium, MacroFactor ($71.99) and Cronometer Gold ($59.99).
- You eat a lot of branded or chain-restaurant food that MyFitnessPal's database covers.
- You want the app in a language other than English, such as Hindi, Korean or Portuguese, that many trackers don't offer.
- You'll go back and fix entries when you know the photo missed oil or got the portion wrong.

**Skip Cal AI if:**

- You want every photo estimate shown to you, and corrected, before it reaches your total.
- You often can't take a photo and would rather say or type the meal.
- You don't want to pay a MyFitnessPal-owned company, or you left MyFitnessPal on purpose.
- The April 2026 billing removal makes you uneasy about its paywall.
- You want something free. Cal AI's scanning is paid after any trial. SnapCalorie gives 3 AI logs a day free, and Cronometer has a large free tier without photo logging.

## When Cal AI is the better choice

If you're a photo-only logger who wants the lowest price among AI photo trackers and the simplest app, Cal AI is a better choice than Callie. It costs less at the top tier, it's available in more languages (15 against our 6), and MyFitnessPal's database behind it is larger than ours. If auto-logging hasn't caused you problems, there's little reason to switch.

## Where Callie fits

Callie is our app, and it's built for people who want to check the AI's work. A photo scan opens a review screen with the foods, portions, calories and macros, and nothing is saved until you confirm. You can log by voice or text when a photo is awkward, and Callie is independent, built by Inlab Products rather than owned by MyFitnessPal. It also has a streak dashboard, cheat days you schedule that keep your streak, and daily diet plans matched to your BMI.

Callie costs more than Cal AI's top tier. You get 3 AI logs to try it, then it's $34.99 a year, $14.99 a month or $4.99 a week in the US.
