# How Many Calories in a Döner Kebab? Döner vs Dürüm vs Box, and the Sauce Problem

> A döner kebab in bread has about 670 to 790 calories, and a döner plate with fries and garlic sauce passes 1,000. Here are values from Germany's national food database and USDA, five orders worked out with three sauces, chicken vs veal, and how to log a döner.

## Key takeaways

- A döner in bread with 120 g of meat is about 675 calories with herb sauce and about 780 with garlic sauce, by our arithmetic. Germany's national food database (BLS) lists 177 to 199 kcal per 100 g of finished döner, or 673 to 756 for a 380 g döner.
- The sauce is the biggest swing. 60 g of yogurt-based herb sauce is about 56 kcal and 60 g of mayonnaise-based garlic sauce about 164. If the garlic sauce is mostly mayonnaise or oil, it passes 400.
- A dürüm is not lighter than a döner in bread. The flatbread wrap is denser than döner bread (296 vs 248 kcal per 100 g) and usually holds more meat. Our dürüm comes to about 750 to 860 calories.
- Chicken döner isn't automatically lighter. The BLS lists grilled poultry döner meat at 268 kcal per 100 g, close to 80/20 ground beef at 270 (USDA). German rules allow up to 18% skin in a poultry döner.
- The döner plate and döner box are heavy because of the fries. 150 g of fries adds 305 to 468 kcal. Our plate with garlic sauce comes to about 1,040 calories, and about 480 without fries and with herb sauce.

Callie is our app. This is a data page: the calorie values come from Germany's national food database, the Bundeslebensmittelschlüssel (BLS 4.0) from the Max Rubner Institute, from USDA FoodData Central and from two studies. The assembled totals are our own arithmetic from those values. All sources are listed at the bottom.

## The 30-second answer

A döner kebab in bread has about **670 to 790 calories**. With herb sauce it's about 675 by our arithmetic, with garlic sauce about 780. A dürüm is 750 to 860, a döner box 690 to 800 and a döner plate with fries 890 to 1,040. The [Bundeslebensmittelschlüssel](https://blsdb.de/) lists 177 kcal per 100 g of finished döner with veal or beef and 199 kcal with poultry. A [2015 Italian study](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5076648/) measured 900.9 kcal per serving on average. The sauce moves the total most: at 60 g, herb and garlic sauce are about 110 calories apart.

## Döner calories by component

The most accurate way to estimate a döner is to add up its parts. These are the values we used.

| Feature | Per 100 g | Typical amount | Calories in that amount | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poultry döner meat, grilled | 268 kcal | 120 g | 322 kcal | BLS V422072 |
| Ground beef 80/20, cooked (proxy for veal/beef) | 270 kcal | 120 g | 324 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 171797 |
| Chicken thigh, skinless, roasted | 179 kcal | 120 g | 215 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 172388 |
| Wheat flatbread (döner bread) | 248 kcal | 110 g | 273 kcal | BLS B782100 |
| Wheat tortilla (dürüm/yufka) | 296 kcal | 100 g | 296 kcal | BLS B783012 |
| Herb sauce (yogurt dip with herbs) | 93 kcal | 60 g | 56 kcal | BLS X3A9020 |
| Garlic sauce (grill sauce, mayonnaise base) | 274 kcal | 60 g | 164 kcal | BLS R148600 |
| Hot sauce (tomato chili sauce) | 92 kcal | 60 g | 55 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 171595 |
| Garlic sauce, oil-based (toum) | 683 kcal | 60 g | 410 kcal | USDA FNDDS 2710169 |
| Cabbage, raw | 25 kcal | 40 g | 10 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 169975 |
| Onions, raw | 40 kcal | 20 g | 8 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 170000 |
| Tomatoes, raw | 18 kcal | 30 g | 5 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 170457 |
| French fries, deep-fried | 203 kcal | 150 g | 305 kcal | BLS K130492 |
| French fries, fast food | 312 kcal | 150 g | 468 kcal | USDA SR Legacy 170698 |

_BLS 4.0 (blsdb.de) and USDA FoodData Central, accessed October 27, 2026. Typical amounts are our assumptions, not published serving sizes. The BLS has no separate entry for veal or beef döner meat, so we use USDA 80/20 ground beef as a proxy._

We don't know which sauce your shop uses. A garlic sauce made from yogurt with some mayonnaise is close to our 274 kcal. One that's almost all mayonnaise or oil is closer to 683.

## Five orders, added up

From the table above we assembled the five most common orders, each with poultry döner meat and three sauces. These are our calculations, not lab measurements.

| Feature | What's in it | Herb sauce | Garlic sauce | Hot sauce |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Döner in bread | 110 g bread, 120 g meat, 90 g salad, 60 g sauce | About 675 | About 780 | About 675 |
| Dürüm | 100 g wrap, 140 g meat, 90 g salad, 60 g sauce | About 750 | About 860 | About 750 |
| Yufka (large roll) | 120 g wrap, 160 g meat, 110 g salad, 70 g sauce | About 880 | About 1,005 | About 875 |
| Döner plate with fries | 180 g meat, 150 g fries, 125 g salad, 80 g sauce | About 895 | About 1,040 | About 895 |
| Döner box | 120 g meat, 150 g fries, 30 g salad, 60 g sauce | About 690 | About 800 | About 690 |

_Our totals from the component table, rounded to the nearest 5 kcal. Fries use the BLS value for deep-fried fries (203 kcal per 100 g). With the USDA fast-food value (312 kcal), the plate and box are about 165 kcal higher. With veal/beef instead of poultry (USDA proxy), each total is 2 to 4 kcal higher._

As a cross-check, our döner in bread weighs 380 g. At the BLS values for whole döner (177 and 199 kcal per 100 g), that's 673 to 756 kcal, the same range as our arithmetic. In many German cities dürüm and yufka are the same dish. Where they differ, yufka is often the bigger roll, and that's how we counted it.

## The sauce problem

The sauce decides more of the calories than the meat does. At 60 g, yogurt-based herb sauce and mayonnaise-based garlic sauce are about 110 kcal apart.

Here's what 60 g of sauce adds:

- **Herb sauce** (yogurt dip with herbs, BLS): 93 kcal per 100 g, so 56 kcal
- **Hot sauce** (tomato chili sauce, USDA): 92 kcal per 100 g, so 55 kcal
- **Tzatziki** (USDA): 91 kcal per 100 g, so 55 kcal
- **Garlic sauce with mayonnaise** (grill sauce, BLS): 274 kcal per 100 g, so 164 kcal
- **Oil-based garlic sauce** (toum, USDA): 683 kcal per 100 g, so 410 kcal

The gap between the lightest and heaviest is 355 kcal, more than all the bread in the döner (273 kcal). The trouble is that you can't see it. A white garlic sauce might be yogurt or mayonnaise. Ask the shop, or use the middle value if you can't. Ordering "everything with hot sauce" adds little, as long as the hot sauce is tomato and chili.

## Chicken or veal: what German rules say

Chicken döner isn't automatically lighter. The BLS lists more calories for a whole poultry döner than for a veal or beef one: 199 against 177 kcal per 100 g.

What goes into a döner is set by Germany's [Guidelines for Meat and Meat Products](https://www.bmleh.de/SharedDocs/Downloads/DE/_Ernaehrung/Lebensmittel-Kennzeichnung/LeitsaetzeFleisch.pdf?__blob=publicationFile&v=19) (Leitsätze für Fleisch und Fleischerzeugnisse) from the German Food Code Commission. For beef or lamb döner, minced meat can be at most 60%: "ein mitverarbeiteter Hackfleischanteil aus grob entsehntem Rindfleisch (Leitsatznummer 1.2.1.1.2) und/oder grob entsehntem Schaffleisch beträgt höchstens 60 %." Apart from salt and spices, only eggs, onions, oil, milk and yogurt are allowed.

For poultry: "Bei Hähnchen-/Puten- Döner Kebab, Hähnchen-/Puten-Döner Kebap wird kein wie Hackfleisch zerkleinertes Fleisch eingesetzt; der maximale Hautanteil beträgt 18 %." (No minced meat is used, and skin is capped at 18%.) Skin and oil in the marinade explain why grilled poultry döner meat in the BLS has 268 kcal per 100 g, against 179 for skinless chicken thigh (USDA). A spit of lean meat saves about 105 kcal per 120 g. Usually only the shop knows whether yours is one.

## Are you even getting veal?

Often not. Bavaria's food safety authority (LGL) tested 60 döner samples in 2018 and [objected to 50 of them, or 83%](https://www.lgl.bayern.de/lebensmittel/warengruppen/wc_07_fleischerzeugnisse/ue_2018_doener.htm).

The main reason was labelling. The LGL wrote: "In fast allen Fällen wurde ein nur als ‚Döner‘ bezeichnetes Produkt verkauft, bei dem es sich jedoch genau genommen um Puten- oder Hühner-Döner-Kebab handelte." (In almost all cases, a product sold simply as "Döner" was in fact turkey or chicken döner.) If you order "döner" expecting veal, you may well be eating poultry.

For calories, that means you shouldn't expect a big difference between meats. By BLS and USDA values, poultry döner meat (268 kcal) and 80/20 ground beef (270 kcal) are almost level per 100 g. The amount of meat, the sauce and the fries matter more.

Döner is salty with any meat. Grilled poultry döner meat has 1,231 mg of sodium per 100 g in the BLS, which is about 3.7 g of salt in 120 g of meat.

## What studies measured

Two studies analysed whole döner. Both found more than our average order, because their portions were bigger.

**UK, 2009.** Officers from 76 councils sampled 494 döner kebabs for the local-authority body LACORS. [The Register reported](https://www.theregister.com/2009/01/27/doner_kebab_survey) that the average kebab had "nearly 1000 calories", 98% of daily salt and 148% of daily saturated fat. The worst had 1,990 calories before salad and sauces. LACORS chairman Cllr Geoffrey Theobald said, "We would never consider kebabs part of a calorie controlled diet, but the level of saturated fat and salt in some is a serious cause for concern."

**Italy, 2015.** Panozzo and colleagues bought döner from 20 shops in the Veneto region. Servings weighed 274 to 618 g, 402 g on average, with 900.9 kcal and 34.7 g of fat. One serving covered 45% of a woman's daily energy, 36% of a man's and 85.5% of daily salt. The authors concluded: "Döner Kebab can be considered as an occasional substitute to one of the two main meals of the day."

## Lighter orders

The biggest savings come from the sauce and fries, not the meat. These figures come from our component table.

| Swap | Saves about |
|---|---|
| Herb sauce instead of mayonnaise-based garlic sauce, 60 g | 110 kcal |
| Half the sauce: 30 g garlic sauce instead of 60 g | 80 kcal |
| Plate: salad instead of 150 g fries | 290 kcal |
| Döner box with salad instead of fries | 290 kcal |
| Döner in bread instead of a dürüm | 75 kcal |
| Lean skinless chicken instead of poultry döner meat, 120 g | 105 kcal |

Our lightest order is a döner plate without fries, with 150 g of meat, plenty of salad (cabbage, tomato, onion) and 40 g of herb sauce. That's about 480 calories, against about 1,040 for the plate with fries and garlic sauce, and it has more meat than a döner in bread.

If you want it in bread, herb sauce and "not much sauce" gets you to about 645 calories. Our guide to [hidden calories in oil, butter and sauces](/blog/hidden-calories-oil-butter-sauces) covers the fats you can't see in more detail.

## Döner, shawarma and gyros

Döner, Arabic shawarma and Greek gyros all come off a vertical spit. Their calories differ mainly by portion, bread and sauce.

- **Gyros.** USDA lists a gyro sandwich at 184 kcal per 100 g, or 368 for a 200 g sandwich. That's about half a German döner, because it's smaller.
- **Shawarma.** A small UAE chicken shawarma wrap is about 380 calories by our arithmetic, and a large one with fries and toum about 830. Details are in our [shawarma calories](/blog/shawarma-calories) page.
- **Döner.** At 380 g or more, the German döner is one of the biggest portions in the family.

The garlic sauce in shawarma, toum, is usually oil-based and much denser than the yogurt-based garlic sauce many German shops serve.

## How to log a döner in a photo app

Photo apps see the döner, not the sauce inside it. It's spread through the bread or under the salad, and it's the part that swings the total by more than 100 calories.

Research points the same way. In a [NUTRITION 2026 conference abstract](https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1136415) released in July 2026, 102 meals were run through four photo apps. All four underestimated calories "by about 250 to 345 calories, on average". We cover the causes in [why AI calorie apps undercount](/blog/why-ai-calorie-apps-underestimate).

What to do:

1. **Log the döner as the main item.** Pick the right form: bread, dürüm, plate or box.
2. **Log the sauce as its own line.** About 60 g for a standard döner, 80 g for a plate. Use the sauce you actually had.
3. **Log fries separately.** A normal portion is about 150 g.
4. **Check the meat.** A large plate often has 180 g or more.

## Logging a döner in Callie

Callie logs food from a photo, your voice or text, and a photo is never logged automatically. A review screen always comes first. That's where the sauce goes in: add an item and type or say "60 g garlic sauce", or edit the amount if Callie already found it.

You can also just describe it: "chicken döner plate, no fries, extra salad, herb sauce." That works by voice too.

A few things that help in Germany:

- The app is available in German, as well as English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Japanese.
- The AI coach answers in any language, so you can ask it in German how a döner fits into today's budget.
- Callie has no offline mode yet. With no signal, take the photo and log it later.

Callie doesn't prompt you about the sauce. You add it yourself. You get 3 AI logs to try it, then it's €39.99 a year in the eurozone or $34.99 in the US. Details are on [our pricing page](/pricing).

This page is about calorie estimates, not diet advice. Döner is high in salt. If you're managing blood pressure, kidney disease or another condition, ask your doctor or a registered dietitian what fits.

## When another option is the better choice

- **You mostly eat packaged food from German supermarkets.** Fddb and Yazio have large German food databases. See our comparison of [the best calorie tracker app in German](/blog/best-calorie-tracker-app-in-german).
- **You want to track salt and micronutrients.** Callie doesn't track sodium or other micronutrients. Cronometer does, and its free tier includes a barcode scanner. Gold costs $59.99 a year.
- **You want to set each ingredient before saving.** MacroFactor's editable Plate view shows every component, at $71.99 a year.

Callie fits best if you want photo, voice and text logging with a review step before saving, a German interface and a coach you can ask in German, at €39.99 a year.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: How many calories are in a döner kebab?**
A: A standard döner in bread has about 670 to 790 calories, depending on the sauce and the amount of meat. Germany's national food database (BLS) lists 177 kcal per 100 g for a veal or beef döner and 199 kcal for a poultry döner. An Italian lab study measured an average of 900.9 kcal per serving at 402 g, and a 2009 UK survey found nearly 1,000 calories on average.

**Q: Does a dürüm have fewer calories than a döner?**
A: Usually not. The wheat wrap has 296 kcal per 100 g against 248 for döner bread, and a dürüm often holds more meat. By our arithmetic a dürüm with 140 g of meat is about 750 calories with herb sauce and about 860 with garlic sauce, around 75 more than a döner in bread.

**Q: Is chicken döner healthier than veal döner?**
A: Barely, on calories. The BLS lists grilled poultry döner meat at 268 kcal per 100 g, and its whole poultry döner is higher than the veal or beef version (199 vs 177 kcal per 100 g). German rules allow poultry döner to contain up to 18% skin. Only a spit of lean, skinless meat saves much, about 100 kcal per 120 g.

**Q: How many calories are in döner garlic sauce?**
A: It depends on the recipe. A yogurt-based sauce is about 93 kcal per 100 g (BLS, yogurt dip), a mayonnaise-based grill sauce 274 kcal, and an oily garlic sauce like toum 683 kcal (USDA). At 60 g in a döner, that's 56, 164 or 410 kcal. Ask the shop whether its sauce is made with yogurt or mayonnaise.

**Q: What's the lightest döner order?**
A: A döner plate without fries, with extra salad and 40 g of herb sauce, comes to about 480 calories with 150 g of meat by our arithmetic. In bread, the biggest saving is herb sauce instead of garlic sauce (about 110 kcal) and asking for less sauce.

**Q: How do I log a döner in a calorie app?**
A: Log the döner as the main item and the sauce as its own line, about 60 g for a standard döner. A photo app sees the bread, meat and salad but hardly any of the sauce inside. Log fries on a plate or in a box separately, by weight.
